One of the most impressive buildings you will find in Tokyo is the one that houses the Edo-Tokyo Museum. The building is exactly the same height as Edo Castle, but has a decidedly modern, almost sci-fi feel to it.

You will cross a replica of the Nihonbashi Bridge to get into the museum, where you will find the permanent exhibits that chronicle the history of Edo, later named Tokyo. The museum is divided into several sections: the Edo Zone, the Tokyo Zone, and the Second Special Exhibits Gallery.

In the Edo Zone, you will learn about the politics to of the early city that would one day become Tokyo. All of the exhibits and artifacts in the different sections (Edo at the Start, Life in Edo, and Edo Culture) give visitors a great since of the old city and the people who populated it.

The Tokyo Zone begins with exhibits from the conversion of Edo to Tokyo. You can see the way the culture changed, the influences of the West, and the period of WWII and reconstruction. Each of the sections here (the Birth of Tokyo, Capital of Japan, Modern Urban Life, and War and Reconstruction) offers unique insight that visitors from abroad will enjoy.

Visitors will also want to check out the Second Special Exhibits Gallery, where you can sometimes find additional exhibits on display.

You will also find a museum shop, where you can pick up a souvenir, an audiovisual hall, and even the occasional lecture. If you would like, you can even set up a tour of the museum given by an English speaker.
