It became the country’s royal capital in 1802 when Nguyen Anh, who assumed the name of Emperor Gia Long, took control of the entire country and re-established the Nguyen dynasty here. Soon after strengthening his hold to power, the emperor embarked on a building frenzy, changing Hue’s landscape forever.
