An archipelago of 99 islands, Langkawi is once a secret hideaway for pirates. This island which is separated from peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca is recently recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific Cultural and Organization (UNESCO) as a geopark which is a title given to outstanding geological landscapes in the world. It is the only Geopark in Southeast Asia and one of 50 around the world. Sheltered by the mountainous backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, Langkawi escapes the northeastern winter monsoon entirely and enjoys sunny skies when the eastern provinces are flooded. Coupled with natural white sand beaches, lush jungle foliage and craggy mountain peaks, the island was at one time touted as “Malaysia’s best-kept secret”.

The Adventure Begins

The journey from the foot of the hill to the summit is an adventure in itself. You can get there via the town of Tapah or through the new highway at Simpang Pulai. The route via Tapah takes you past natural waterfalls, hot springs, Orang Asli (indigenous people) villages, religous shrines, souvenir shops, roadside markets and much more. A quick stop t Kuala Woh, unveils a recreational park with natural hot springs, while further on at Chenderiang, and Lata Iskandar, beautiful cascading waterfalls beckon.
