It is said that Beijing has one foot in the past and one foot in the future. As the city gears up it is literally in a buzz as it throws off the remnants of a strict reputation. Recent developments and constructions changed the face of this magnificent city.
Many of the major Olympic sporting facilities that where recently contructed were greeted with great approval. Most prominent of these is the National Stadium, fondly called the Bird’s Nest and the aquatic center called the Water Cube which resembles like a huge soap bubble. Hotels have been constructed to accommodate the large number of people that attended the Olympic Games.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with an underground river. One of the river’s distinguishing features is that it emerges directly into the sea, and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full ‘mountain-to-sea’ ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia.

In China, the historic city of Suzhou is a place that is well-known and world renowned to be the “City of Gardens”. These classical gardens of Suzhou are the most refined representations of the art of classical garden design with beautiful landscape. Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature, is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens in the historic city of Suzhou. They are generally acknowledged to be masterpieces of the genre. Dating from the 11th-19th century, the gardens reflect the profound metaphysical importance of natural beauty in Chinese culture in their meticulous design. The gardens are delicate and were built for private use by aristocrats and rich businessmen. Garden design went through an active period during the Ming Dynasty and by the time of the Qing Dynasty, a large number of classical gardens were spread across Suzhou and its suburbs.

The Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva or the Miagao Church is one of the Philippines’ architectural gems and religious gems. The church was constructed in 1797 and it stands as a living legacy of the culture and way of life of the people of Miagao centuries ago. The church’s fortress-like design suggests its dual purpose as a place of worship and as a fort used in defending the town from Moro raiders at that time. Miagao Church is one of only four Augustinian-built churches in the country to make it to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Temple of Preah Vihear is located in Svay Chrum Village on the edge of a plateau that dominates the plain of Cambodia. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and is composed of a series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavements and staircases over 800 meter long axis. it dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. The complex history of the temple can be traced back to the 9th century when the hermitage was founded. This site is particularly well preserved due mainly to its remote location. The temple’s architecture is exceptional and is adapted to the natural environment and the religious function of the temple.

The Mogao Caves or Mogao Grottoes is also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas and Dunhuang Caves form a system of 492 temples. It is an oasis that is strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art which spans a period of 1,000 years. The cave shrines were constructed in 366 CE as places to store scriptures and art. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China. The Mogao Caves or Mogao Grottoes is located in Dunhuang County, Gansu Province, China.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park palys host to some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. The reef is in the depths of the Sulu Sea and holds a wide variety of exotic marine life which is a sanctuary to them. Tubbataha Reef is the Philippines’ only marine natural park and is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site for being a place of global importance, being preserved for generations to come.
